Shopify theme and app detector
Enter any store's address to see which Shopify theme it runs, which apps load on its pages, and what its catalog looks like: how many products, at what prices, and how much is on sale.
What the detector reads
The theme
Shopify themes print a Shopify.theme object into every page with the theme's name and version. We show the theme, the store's own name for its copy, and a link to the Shopify Theme Store page when one exists.
The apps
Apps show up in two ways: scripts loaded from the app's own servers, and theme app extension files Shopify serves from cdn.shopify.com/extensions. We recognise nearly 100 common apps by name and list other app embeds by their extension name.
The catalog
Most Shopify stores publish their product list at /products.json. We read up to 1,000 products for the count, price range, share on sale and recent launches. Shipping protection and gift cards are left out of price figures.
Using it for competitor research
- Check where they sit on price. The median starting price and range show whether a competitor is positioned as the budget or premium option in your category. A high share of products on sale usually means frequent promotions rather than a one-off event.
- Watch how often they launch. The count published in the last 30 days hints at how fast their catalog moves. Republished products count too, so treat it as activity rather than an exact launch count.
- Compare stacks, not just themes. A competitor running a subscriptions app, a loyalty program and SMS marketing is competing on retention, not only on price. Copying their theme won't copy that.
- Find the products you both sell. For those, the price gap decides the sale. Our competitor price check finds the same product in their store and shows the gap.
Questions
How can I tell which theme a Shopify store uses?
Every Shopify Online Store theme prints a small object called Shopify.theme into the page, with the theme's name and version. Enter the store's address above and the detector reads it for you. You can also open the page source (View Source in your browser) and search for Shopify.theme.
Why does it say the theme isn't in the Shopify Theme Store?
The store runs a custom theme, a theme bought outside the Shopify Theme Store, or a theme whose internal name was changed. Large brands usually build their own. The detector only links to a Theme Store page after checking that the page exists.
Why does it say the store has no theme?
The store is headless: Shopify runs the catalog and checkout, but the pages you see are built with a separate front end, so no theme is involved. Apps on headless stores are usually built into the site's own code and are harder to detect.
Why wasn't an app detected?
Apps that only work in the Shopify admin (inventory, accounting, fulfillment), at checkout, or inside Shopify's sandboxed web pixels don't put anything on the storefront page. The detector also reads just the home page and one product page, so an app that only appears on the cart or a collection page won't show up.
Does the store know I checked it?
The store sees an ordinary page visit from our server, not from you. The detector reads the same pages and public product catalog any shopper's browser loads. It doesn't log in or access anything private.
Do you save the stores I check?
No. Results are kept in memory for 15 minutes so a repeat check is instant, then discarded. Nothing is written to a database. See the privacy policy for details.
